Lions Recycle for Sight:

The World Health Organization estimates that the eyesight of one-fourth of the world's population can be improved through the use of corrective lenses.

Unfortunately for many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible. In developing countries,an eye exam costs as much as one month's wages, and a single doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

For nearly 70 years, individual Lions clubs and districts in the U.S., Canada and several other countries have collected used eyeglasses for distribution to the needy in developing nations.

The general public is encouraged to donate their used eyeglasses to their local Lions club, or take your glasses to one of the ten Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers listed below. If you're too busy, mail them to us Roseland Lions Club PO Box 7398, Santa Rosa, CA 95407. If you have too many to handle, email us and we'll make arrangements to have them picked up. A TUTORAL ON LIONS SIGHT PROJECTS

By Frank J. Seidel, PDG (4-C2 2001-2002)

In our infinite wisdom Lions have created three different projects that by their names have become confused in the minds of most Lions. This is an attempt to define the project known as Lions In Sight, Lions Eye Foundation and Lions Campaign Sight First II commonly known as LIS, LEF and CSF II.

LIONS IN SIGHT (LIS) is the Lions recognized program for collecting used eyeglasses. The accumulated glasses are neutralized (measured for prescription), cleaned and then transported to Developing Nations. Most deliveries of glasses are made via a team of volunteer Lions and Optometrists who take the glasses with them to a developing nation where patient eyes are examined and glasses given according to prescription. In some countries like Mexico among others, permanent clinics have been establised. Here, glasses are shipped to the local Lions where they are used at the clinics for the benefit of needy citizens.

LIONS EYE FOUNDATION (LEF) is the recognized program where citizens mostly of MD-4 jurisdiction, but not limited thereto, that cannot pay for and have no insurance can receive surgical procedures of the California Medical Center. The hospital reduces its billings to a diminimus amount which in turn is paid for by the Lions Eye Foundation. The doctors performing the surgeries donate their time to the surgery. Patients must qualify as not being financially able and be sponsored by a Lions Club.

LIONS CAMPAIGN SIGHT FIRST II (CSF II) is the current Lions International program where it is the goal to collect at least $150 million dollars to be used to continue the original efforts of Campaign Sight First I to eradicate blindness, particularly "River Blindness" that exists in Africa. The disease has now been discovered to exist elsewhere including southern USA.

The LIS and LEF programs are funded through Lions Club Memberships, Fellowships and individual contributions, campaign Sight First II is being funded by Club and Individual Lion contributions. Melvin Jones Fellowships can be purchased with the donation earmarked for use in Campaign Sight First II.

The above definition are brief but hopefully sufficient to help the reader distinguish the differences. These are not competitive causes. Each one is essential to our commitment to Helen Keller in being "Knights of the Blind". When you write a cheque and I suggest that a cheque be written to each program, remember how much you are really helping and that when you serve,

We Serve".
